Now focusing on expanding their live shows, honing in on popular social media tags, and growing their voice in new ways, pop duo The Chainsmokers are relishing in the success of hard work and collaboration with top artists such as Halsey in their new single “Closer”.
One day Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall of The Chainsmokers were hanging out after Andrew had hit the gym listening to the “Young and Free” playlist on Spotify, ending up disappointed because everyone sounded the exact same in terms of style, having no real distinct voice. Thinking of a creative new idea for a song, they decided to make something that was based on real life experiences more than based on trying to fit in. Andrew was from a “podunk” town in rural Maine and went to school with extremely wealthy / rich girls who he had grown up trying to impress and hook up with, later to be unimpressed.

Thus, the idea for “Closer” was about hooking up with an ex who they bumped into at a bar and how unique it is to already know everything about each other and the types of feelings that get stirred up from that type of relatable experience.
Both Andrew and Alex were DJ’s who were into electronic music well before it became as popular as it is today (with artists like Aviccii, David Guetta, DeadMau5, etc). Alex was just DJing as a side-gig in order to make a little extra money and have fun, and who eventually quit after being introduced to Andrew from his DJ after his former bandmate had parted ways with him (still retaining The Chainsmokers name).
The two got along so well, in fact, that their initial success led to them to work with the chart-topping artist Halsey. They mention that they love her voice because it’s so unabashedly unique and true to herself and that she was a perfect fit for the hit “Closer”.
